Obama to send 30,000 new troops to Afghanistan

President Obama's speech on Afghanistan called for the deployment of an additional 30,000 troops to country within the next 6 months with the intention of beginning to withdrawal troops from the region in 2011. While the speech game a time line for the surge and withdrawal, the President did make a persuasive case for sending more military to Afghanistan.

Though his rhetoric would suggest otherwise, President Obama has now taken ownership of the military conflict in Afghanistan which, leading up to his speech, he tried to attribute to the previous administration. Obama who while a senator and presidential candidate opposed a surge of troops in Iraq, is now proposing a surge of his own in Afghanistan.

Some of the people commenting above have conveniently forgotten that we were attacked by Al Quaida eight years ago, with devastaing effect. President Obama has said many times in recent weeks that his number one job is to keep the American people safe. This can only be done by targeting and defeating Al Quaida, and the only way to accomplish this goal is to squeeze these terrorists between a stabilized Afghanistan and a rejuvenated Pakistan. President Obama has made the correct choice, as painful as it may be to some.

As I read this thru wet eyes my son has been recalled back into service after being out 2 years. I cannot understand why him? He did his time of 4 years in the Army and spent his 1 year in Iraq. Now he has to go back. He just got his life in oreder and thru with all the training with the Sheriffs Dept and now he has to give up the job he loves. I voted for Obama, but I wont vote yes again.

I'm disappointed at the fact that the Obama campaign consisted of him explaining he would bring the troops home, but now he is sending more in. As our president I understand that he obviously knows about much more when it comes to the war and is putting our best interest first, but it is a horrible thing to see more of our people going into war.

This takes the cake. I voted for President Obama to bring home the troops and end these horrific and stupid wars in the middle east. I am extremely disappointed in his decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. I'm afraid he has sealed his doom with regard to being re-elected for a second term.
