How To Actually Reform Healthcare

Today, President Obama will host members of Congress from both political parties at the White House to discuss health reform. He has already put on the table an ambitious plan that takes elements from the bills already passed by the House and Senate and adds others, such as an agency to control health-insurance premiums.

The fundamental question participants must address is whether to use the president's plan as a starting point for negotiations, or to scrap it and start over.

Our recommendation: scrap it and start over. Its key elements—mandates, heavy-handed insurance regulation, and entitlement-based, middle-income subsidies—must go. None of them address health care's fundamental problem: high and rising costs. Instead, the various versions of health reform put forth by the president and his party are based on expanding health-insurance coverage. The inevitable consequence will be to exacerbate the cost problem. And the American public knows it.

Despite the claims of some partisans to the contrary, the president's plan is failing because it does not speak to the concerns of the majority of Americans. Instead of addressing the high and rising costs of care, it proposes mandates, invasive regulation, and unaffordable new entitlements. This will not bring health-care costs down—it will only make this problem worse.

Wow, none of what anybody has said on here has happened or is, even true. I guess truth just gets in the way of all that racist and partisan hatred.

Just like the legal drugs we take, Canada brings them to market years before us and if there is a problem with them, they ban them. The FDA then ignores this and looks at the 6 week theory test of long term use and approves the drugs banned by Canada. Canada has had a Universal Health Care for many years, so why are we trying to make up something without just following in the footsteps of a proven plan?

I agree somewhat with the article in that costs must be reigned-in. It has become common knowledge that costs for medical care are vastly inflated by providers because those costs are paid for by insurance companies. There is not enough oversight to sort out the fraudulent fleecing by so-called doctors who gouge Social Security and Medicare shamelessly. The program offered by the Obama Administration offers us a place to start with regard to regulating costs. I say, give it a chance.

Right now is the time we should come together and vote this bill in for all American's. We should back this president that has done above and beyond the work to get this bill passed. When the fraud that has been going on all these years is stopped you will see that this bill was paid for by most of what we were being charged before and the fraudulent procedures of some medical people. Let's get this passed in 2010.

"President Obama proposes mandates, invasive regulation, and unaffordable new entitlements." Unfavorable to whom? Corporations, stockholders, and or The Freedom Newspaper Group? Stop obstructing justice long enough to save the republic and support your president.

I just saw a program on tv where this Dr. was explaining why medical care is so expensive. He showed the costs of a IV at 250 dollars, the actual costs of the bag and sugar water is more like $1 and a stapel gun, sold for $1200, which actually costs only $22 to make, but because its medical, they jack the price up to take advantage of sick people, its nothing more than a racket. Do this in other business and see what happens.
