Welcome

Welcome to FreedomPolitics.com, where our mission is to advance human liberty.

About Us

FreedomPolitics.com, launched Jan. 20, 2009, promotes the two most important principles for a free country: individual liberty and the individual responsibility that entails.

The guiding philosophy was developed by Raymond Cyrus Hoiles, founder of what is today the nation's 12th largest media company, Freedom Communications Inc., based in Irvine. R.C. Hoiles started his media company in 1935 with the purchase of the then-Santa Ana Register. Over the years he added many daily newspapers in small communities around the United States. His descendents continue to control the company, which today owns more than 100 daily and weekly newspapers and magazines, including the Orange County Register, as well as eight broadcast stations. Its Web sites attract 3.6 million page views on average a day and 600,000 unique visitors. The philosophy continues to animate the editorial pages and online opinion sites of Freedom's newspapers. The Orange County Register is the largest libertarian newspaper in the world, and the home base of FreedomPolitics.com.

R.C., as he was known, came to the "small l" libertarian philosophy later in life and after many years of study. He famously believed that freedom was "not a political grant from government. Freedom is neither license nor anarchy. It is self-control. No more. No less." R.C. was the only American newspaper publisher we know of to oppose the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. He stood up for Mexican American families in Santa Ana against a local school board that wanted to force segregration, and vigorously defended rights to property, free speech and free trade.

FreedomPolitics.com serves as a hub of news and commentary for the freedom movement, defined in the broadest sense. Topics range from politics to pop culture, with contributors hailing from every point on the political spectrum, so long as they support a growth in liberty and a decrease in the power of the government. The site features daily headlines, original and aggregated commentary, and daily blogging, including the Ask a Libertarian column moderated by Freedom Communications adviser Tibor Machan.

Submissions

Freedom Politics welcomes unsolicited submissions, but prefers queries. Send a one paragraph summary of your idea for a guest column (or guest blog) to bcalle [at] ocregister.com.

We accept pieces on a wide variety of topics and viewpoints, so long as they support individual liberty and self-governance. Our writers frequently disagree, and we don't shy from controversy, but we don't publish polemics or yet another take on the topic du jour.

This being the web, length can vary, but for guest columns we prefer a minimum of 700 words, and to the long-winded, remember: if you can make your point in fewer words, please do. Check out the site for examples of the type of writing we prefer and drop us a line.
